  • Dynamic models of blast-furnace smelting for trainers and researchers

Abstract  From the perspectives of training and research’ models with concentrated parameters and models with distributed parameters represent two levels of simulation of the dynamics of the thermal state of blast furnaces. Using a hierarchical structure with a minimum of equations in the basic system ensures visibility — a prerequisite to success. The use of nonstandard numerical methods provides for stable calculations with a minimum number of steps in the subdivision and’ thus’ high speed in the calculation. The use of such models by technologists will improve the quality of the intuitive decisions that they make.

  • Reducing noise and vibration in forging shops

Abstract  This article examines the issue of reducing noise and vibration in forging shops. Results are presented from studies organized to develop designs of vibration-proofing devices for hammers in these shops’ since such hammers are the main vibrationally active equipment in the shops. Durable and highly efficient sound suppressors have been designed to alleviate aerodynamic noise from the most active sources — the air distributors of the control systems of presses in forging shops. Recommendations are given on use of the proposed measures in these facilities.

  • Current trends in the development and production of steels and pipes for gas and oil pipelines: An international scientific-technical conference

Abstract  This article presents a survey of reports delivered at an International Conference hosted by the I. P. Bardin Central Research Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy in February 2008. Presentations given by specialists from Russia’ Ukraine’ the United States’ Belgium’ Brazil’ and Austria focused on important problems being encountered in ensuring that Russian pipe manufacturers have an adequate supply of high-quality steel for the construction of pipelines that are being built or have been planned. The reports examined aspects of the production of high-strength tube steels at Russian plants and experiences with the use of steels of strength classes X80–X100 in pipelines.

  • Features of a technology for making steel in 180-ton arc furnaces in the electric steelmaking shop at the Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Combine

Abstract  This article presents the main specifications of arc furnaces that have been installed in the electric steelmaking shop at the Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Combine. One feature of these furnaces is that they can be operated with the use of liquid pig iron. Here’ the amount of pig iron in the charge can be as high as 40%. The use of liquid pig (up to 30%) shortens the refining operation in the furnace.

  • Technology for making welding wire from different alloys at the Kamensk-Ural’skii Nonferrous Metals Processing Plant

Abstract  This article describes the solution found by KUZOTsM to the problem of making efficient use of universal equipment to fill orders for very small batches of metal that are untypical of metal-shaping shops. • Impact of boron on melt properties and structurization of iron and nickel-based steels and alloys

Abstract  Comparison of the results obtained from studies of the effect of boron microadditives on the structure and properties of liquid melts and of the alloys crystallizing out of such melts indicates that the reactions between boron and other highly active surfactants such as oxygen’ sulfur’ phosphorus’ nitrogen’ and carbon must be taken into account when determining the optimum amount of boron to be added. Thus’ in order for boron to have a greater effect on steel structurization and properties’ the most active surfactants — oxygen and sulfur — must be removed before the boron is added to the liquid metal.

  • Pilot production of casing tubes from 20Kh1MFA steel that is resistant to media containing hydrogen sulfide

Abstract  We discuss techniques for fabrication of low-alloy steel items that are resistant to sulfide stress cracking when used in environments containing hydrogen sulfide. We also describe implementation of these techniques during production of Grade L80 casing pipe from 200Kh1MFA steel at Severskiy Trubnyy Zavod (Seversk Pipe Plant). The irreversible structural changes that occur in the steel under study upon exposure to a medium containing hydrogen sulfide were studied during tests to determine resistance to sulfide stress cracking.

  • Mathematically modelling MHD processes in a flow of liquid metal during electromagnetic mixing in semicontinuous steel-casting machines

Abstract  Mathematical modeling of electromagnetic mixing (EMM) in round semifinished products obtained on a semicontinuous caster at the Elektrostal’ Metallurgical Plant showed that the units developed for EMM in the mold and the zone where solidification of the casting is completed provide for mixing of the liquid phase of the ingot with maximum linear velocities in the range 0.5–0.9 m/sec. Calculated data on the solidification of semifinished products obtained by semi-continuous casting make it possible to determine the position of the liquid phase of the ingot in order to move the carriage of the EMM stator as solidification of the ingot proceeds.

Abstract  This article examines the system used for electrically powering ore-roasting furnaces at Georgian Manganese (in Zestafoni’ Georgia) and discusses its main shortcomings. It is shown that it would be possible to improve these furnaces’ power supply. The proposed improvements could be incorporated into a larger project aimed at rebuilding and upgrading the electric power supply system of the entire plant.

  • Improving the service characteristics of powder steel parts via multicomponent saturation of working surfaces

Abstract  Multicomponent diffusional saturation with manganese’ chromium’ and silicon has been found to increase the wear resistance and longevity of locking sleeves. Comparative bench tests indicated that treated sleeves had fewer nicks’ and that the surface roughness was lower than that of batch-produced sleeves. The process that was developed enables substantial increases in the service life of machinery and equipment used in agriculture’ the timber industry’ and railroad equipment.

  • Formation characteristics of the lower part of large forging-grade ingots of Cr-Ni-Mo steels

Abstract  Studies of the crystalline structure of the precipitation cone in large forging-grade ingots show that the settling cone has a zonal structure that describes all ingots studied’ independent of the ingot geometry and parameters of the pour process. Increasing the bulk crystallization factor facilitates accelerated movement of the vertical hardening front’ which moves the defect zones into higher-level horizons and improves the replenishment of axial defects in the ingot. Development of measures to increase the number of phase nuclei (using stream inoculation during ingot pours’ and pouring of additional material at the head of the casting) enables the production of ingots with a more homogeneous structure by reducing the propagation depth of axial defects and reducing the extent of the arc crack zone.

  • Modern lubricating and deoxidizing compounds for improved quality and operational reliability of seamless pipe

Abstract  The use of polyphosphate-based lubricant compounds enables the following: removal of scale from the interior surface of sleeves; creation of a reliable parting layer in the contact zone between the tool and metal being formed; and protection of the interior surface of the pipe from the effects of corrosion’ thereby improving the operational specifications of the end product. The use of modern lubricating and deoxidizing compounds enhances the operational reliability of the pipe and enables competitive products to be exported onto the international marketplace.

  • Topometric measurement of the flatness of rolled products — the system TopPlan

Abstract  The system TopPlan is successfully being used on plate hot-rolling mills’ hot-strip mills (in the finishing line and/or ahead of the coiler)’ cold-rolling mills’ and strip-finishing (galvanizing’ tin-coating’ trimming) lines. The system can also be used to obtain independent measurements in order to ensure the quality of products outside the production line. By projecting fringe patterns onto the product being rolled’ TopPlan — a topometric system for determining the flatness of sheet’ plate’ and strip — allows continuous three-dimensional monitoring of the height distribution over the entire length and width of the product. The measurement data are continuously recorded by a CCD camera. The reliable operation of the system in accordance with industrial standards guarantees a high degree of reliability in the production process.
