The main research topics of A02 division are as follows: (1) structure analysis of as-formed and supercooled liquid states of metallic glasses by high-resolution electron microscopy and electron diffraction, and synchrotron X-ray radiation; (2) evaluation of electronic structures of metallic glasses and related compounds by X-ray photo-emission spectroscopy (XPS) and band-structure calculation; (3) analysis of atomic structures and dynamics of metallic glasses by neutron scattering; and (4) direct observation of the glass transition from liquid to glass state on an atomic scale using in-situ high-resolution TEM.

Modelling of Metallic Glass Structures
Structure modellings with atomic short and medium range order for some important metallic glasses will be performed using three different techniques of X-ray (synchrotron radiation), neutron and electron diffraction so that the structure model can satisfy all these diffraction data. The constructed models will be used for band-structure calculation in this division and also for the computer simulations of mechanical properties in the division A03.
[Phase 2]
Understanding of Glass Transition Phenomena
Investigations of structural dynamics by neutron scattering and physical properties using ultra-sonic attenuation and also free-volumes by positron annihilation below and above Tg will be concentrated to understand glass-transition phenomena in detail.
[Phase 3]
Understanding of Glass Forming Ability and Thermal Stability
Glass-forming ability and thermal stability in crystallization of some important glasses will be investigated through direct atomic scale observation near the melting point and Tg by in-situ high-resolution TEM.
[Phase 4]
Electronic Structures of Metallic Glasses
For understanding thermal stability of metallic glasses, band structure calculation and XPS analysis of metastable phases in metallic glasses will be performed together with theoretical band structure simulations using structure models made in this division.
[Phase 5]
Application to Practical Metallic Glasses
Atomic and electronic structure analyses of metallic glasses also encompass the field of practical Fe- and Ti-based metallic glasses for the development of these glasses by collaborating with the division A01.
[Phase 6]
Atomic Structures of Liquid State of Metallic Glasses
Structures of liquid and supercooled liquid states of metallic glasses will be investigated by diffraction techniques followed by their structural modellings.
